Winter Auto Service Tips | High Point, NC

As winter quickly approaches, the weather gets colder and colder, bringing snow, ice, and sleet to our roads. Slippery conditions can make driving dangerous, while the bitter cold can cause unexpected car problems. Here’s what you can do to counteract those automotive winter blues.

Check your engine antifreeze level

When the temperatures, drop your engine can freeze up, leaving you stranded in the cold. That’s why you should make sure your engine has enough antifreeze. You can check your antifreeze levels pretty easily by following instructions in your car’s manual.

Check your tires

Having good tires is essential to maintaining traction on winter roads. You can check your tire pressure and tread depth to ensure your tires are in good working order for the wintertime. To check your tread, you can place a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down into your tire’s tread. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, then it’s time for new tires.

Make sure your wiper fluid is ready

If you don’t make any adjustments, your original wiper fluid is bound to freeze inside your vehicle, potentially damaging the fluid lines. You do have the option to switch out your wiper fluid for a winter formulation that won’t freeze and will act as a de-icing agent. Not only will this increase your visibility, but it will also spare you from having to scrape ice off the windshield on cold winter mornings.

Keep a box full of winter supplies in your car

In case something goes wrong and you’re left in the middle of nowhere without transportation, a winter supply box could help you stay safe until help arrives. Some of the things you should consider putting in that box include a flashlight, a blanket, road flares, first-aid, warm clothes, a radio, and an ice scraper. You can even keep some energy snacks in the box as well.
